Ward and Sapphire are double clear as US ralies in Round 2 to finish 2nd to Germany at LaBaule Super League

McLain Ward and Sapphire lead the USA team with a double clear round to a second place finish at the LaBaule Super League on Friday. Ward was one of only 3 double clear performances. The others belonging to Frances Michel Robert and Galet D’Auzay and Great Bitains Tim Gredley on Omelli. Marcus Ehning was clear in the first Round for Germany and opted not to go in Round B, since Germany had already clinched the win.

Interesting to note that French Chef d’Equipe J. M. Bonneau, only yesterday afternoon substituted Michel Robert to ride in place of Eugénie Angot whose Cigale du Taillis had trouble handling the big fences on Thursday. “Cigale needs a little more sparkling. Eugénie agrees with me on this point”, declared Jean-Maurice at the end of the class. “She is a bit unreliable for tomorrow’s Super League competition.” It certainly looks like Jean-Maurice made the right call as France with Michel’s efforts finished in third place overall.

The German performance was again brilliant. Two clear rounds by Marco Kutscher aboard Montender and Marcus Ehning on Noltes Kuchengirl along with just single time faults from Ludger Beerbaum on L’Espoir and Otto Becker on Doble’s Cento gave the Grermans a commanding lead after Round 1.

When asked about the dominance of the Germans today, Ludger Beerbaum commented, “We are very lucky in Germany because we have great strength in our pool of riders. We could replace all four of the riders who are here today and still be seriously competitive”

With just a single fault, the next closest competitor was Switzerland and France with 9 faults, each more than two rails off of the pace. The US Team stood in 4th place with 12 faults. Jefferey Welles and Armani and Margie Engle aboard Hidden Creek’s Wapino had two rails for 8 faults. While Lauren Hough and Casadora had but a rail and McLain and Sapphire were clear.

In Round B, Welles got the team off to a great start when he went clear aboard Armani. Lauren Hough had two rails and then Margie improved on her first round score having just 4 faults in round B. That left it up to Ward who for the second time, mastered the course with another clear ride well within the time allowed. That gave the team a 4 point score in round B and elevated them to second place overall.

A good start to the new season. Aachen is next on the schedule.
