Andrea Taylor Continues as National Team Coach for Para-Equestrian Canada

Ottawa, ON—Para-Equestrian Canada is pleased to announce that Andrea Taylor, from Langley, BC, has extended her commitment as the national team coach for Para-Equestrian Canada until the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

Taylor, a certified Level 3 Dressage coach, has been the national team coach for the Canadian Para-Equestrian Team since 2007.

Taylor has guided the team to results at the 2007 World Championships as well as the 2008 Paralympic Games, where rider Lauren Barwick, originally of Aldergrove, BC, secured individual gold and silver medals. Taylor was awarded the Petro Canada Coaching Excellence Award in recognition of her coaching achievements at the 2008 Paralympic Games.

“Andrea has been an integral part of the Canadian Para-Equestrian Team for the past several years,” said Elizabeth Robinson, High Performance chair and chef d’équipe for Para-Equestrian Canada. “We are thrilled to have Andrea’s dedication and expertise leading into the 2010 World Equestrian Games.”

In addition to her extensive coaching background, Taylor is also a high performance athlete and has previously been designated as a short and long-listed rider with Dressage Canada. In 1989, Taylor was a member of the gold medal team at the North American Young Riders Championships, and she finished fifth individually.

In 2004, Taylor generously allowed Barwick to ride her Grand Prix mount, Dior at the Paralympic Games in Athens, which was Taylor’s first introduction to Para-Equestrian competition.


About the Para-Equestrian Discipline
In Para-Equestrian, each rider is classified according to his or her functional ability. They are assessed by trained physiotherapists and doctors who evaluate either muscle strength, coordination, or a combination thereof throughout the athlete’s body. The rider is then given a functional profile that indicates the grade in which they can compete. There are five grades of competitions in dressage, with Grade IA representing the more severely impaired riders, and Grade IV representing the least severely impaired riders. The competition within each grade is judged on the functional skill of the rider, and not the level of disability.
