With some 1325 entries, the Munich-based Youngster Cup (www.bayerns-pferde.de) to showcase tomorrow’s equine stars is becoming a major show on the German circuit. Only in its second year, it has already established itself as a real crowd-puller for national and international horse-enthusiasts alike who crowd to the Olympic riding arena in the Munich suburb of Riem in the hope of discovering the next great crack in the showjumping ring. In attendance were visitors from such far-away places as Mexico and the United States, some of which went home with several horses they bought.
Four days of beautiful weather and challenging classes meant a great time for public and riders alike, who gathered at Riem from May 4th to 7th to watch the most promising young horses of Southern Germany in action.
On the showjumping side, one young horse who particularly impressed the public was 4-year old Bavarian Warmblood Quentin, by Quartier Latin out of a Carthago mother. The sire, Quartier Latin, was sold to the La Silla stud in Mexico and high hopes were placed on Quentin who is currently considered to be one of the most promising offspring in Europe of this exceptional sire. In training with the German top rider Uwe Schwanz (www.uweschwanz.com) of Holzkirchen, Quentin was shown for the first time at Riem.
His breeder, Georg Niedermair of the famous Niedermair breeders dynasty that also brought forth the world class stallion Lord Sinclair, had travelled to the show especially to see his horse in action. Ridden by Uwe Schwanz,Quentin placed fourth in his first ever jumping show, and came a close second the following day in the 1.10 class.
The prize for best 5-year old Showjumper went to Diwa Lady (by Clintino - Landjonker), bred by Georg Weber and shown by Veronika Kornfelder. Best 6-year old jumping horse was Canaletto (by Campamento - Lanacar - bred by Johann Ertl), shown by Uwe Schwanz.
The Youngster Cup is open to all national riders, as well as international riders with a valid competitor’s licence. The next Youngster Cup event in the Riem Olympic Riding Center will be held in 2007.
