Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Hoy, Hoy, Hoy…

Rolex 2006 will be memorable in many ways. The record crowd of nearly 10,000 (a 15-year high) that filled the Horse Park during the past four days, the perfect weather, and the fact that Andrew Hoy (AUS) moved up 16 places to win this year’s CCI****.

Andrew, riding Mr. Tom Attwood, and Mr. Richard Constant’s Master Monarch was one of only nine horses (out of the 34 who show-jumped today) to post a double clear round. Andrew had been standing in sixth place after cross-country, but when the top five horses all had jumping faults, Andrew found himself in the winner’s circle, and wearing a new Rolex watch.

Becky Holder, the overnight leader, riding Tom Holder’s Courageous Comet, pulled four rails and incurred eight time penalties, to finish in a disappointing thirteenth place.

Standing in second place after cross-country, Polly Stockton (GBR) on Anne Henson’s Tom Quigley, had a stop at the third fence, and a rail down later in the course. She also racked up five time penalties to drop her to seventh place overall.

Heidi White (USA) riding her own Northern Spy was the highest placed American rider, taking home the coveted USEF CCI**** Championship Trophy. Heidi had two rails down, but actually moved from third to second when Becky and Polly incurred more penalty points.

Rounding out the top three placings was Stephen Bradley riding Southern Edition Farm, LLC’s Brandenburg’s Joshua. Stephen moved up ten places with a foot-perfect, double clear round, and having, perhaps, the nicest round of the day.

Sara Mittleider piloting her own El Primero won the J.D. Reeves Perpetual Trophy for the highest placed Young Rider, and the Best Conditioned Horse Trophy. Sara finished fourteenth overall with a score of 69.4

During this afternoon’s press conference, Andrew Hoy praised his hard working grooms, and said, “He couldn’t do this without them.” Andrew gave kudus to his wife Bettina (also an international three-day rider) adding, “Bettina stayed home to keep my two Badminton horses fit. Tonight, Andrew is flying back to his home base in Minchinhampton, England to prepare for this weekend’s Badminton Horse Trials.
