Beth Underhill and Amy Millar Both Come Up Winners at Halifax Kubota Cup

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA, OCTOBER 13, 2025 Beth Underhill, of Schomberg, Ontario, won the Kubota Cup Eastern Conference series finale in Halifax tonight on Magdaline, in the same venue where she earned her first major grand prix victory exactly 20 years ago. Tonight’s win came in a fast-paced, 8-way tie-breaker before an enthusiastic crowd.

Amy Millar, of Perth, Ontario, came into tonight’s competition as the leader in the Kubota Cup Eastern Conference, partnered with Costa Rica. Her brother, 33-year-old Jonathon, was her closest rival on Fancy Hill. Underhill’s win wasn’t enough to overtake the two Millars in the overall series standings, but it was enough to assure her a position in the Kubota Cup National Final at Toronto’s Royal Winter Fair.

Although it only took a sixth place finish for Amy Millar to maintain her lead in the series she also finished second in tonight’s competition on her up-and-coming Piccobello Val du Geer.

The top five in the Kubota Cup Eastern Conference, who are now assured a berth in the National Final are Amy Millar on Costa Rica; Jonathon Millar, also of Perth, Ontario, on Fancy Hill; Elissa Reisman, of Toronto, Ontario on Iveena S; Lauren Hayes, of Orangeville, Ontario, on Sweet Leonie; and Beth Underhill on Magdaline.

Underhill was at a disadvantage tonight riding third of eight in the jump-off. Amy Millar had set a blazing pace, jumping first on Piccobello Val du Geer, in 37.158 seconds. “You can never underestimate the competition”, Underhill said, knowing she had five strong competitors coming behind her. So she took all the risks and stopped the clock in an unbeatable 35.461. Millar knew she had room to be more conservative on Costa Rica and assure herself the Eastern Conference title with a top-five performance. But that wasnot her plan. “I like to try to win every event”, she said and she did just that. A risky turn to make up time cost her a knockdown and relegated her to sixth, but earned her a beautiful Nova Scotia-made crystal trophy, a Kubota RTV and a wealth of prizes for herself and her horse.

The Kubota Cup National Final is on November 3 at the Royal Winer Fair in Toronto.
