Debbie Stephens Wins Nicola’s Restaurants Power & Speed Stake at 30th Annual I Love New York Horse Show

Lake Placid, NY—July 6, 2007—Debbie Stephens of Palmetto, FL rode Quik to victory in the Nicola’s Restaurants Power & Speed Stake at the 30th annual I Love New York Horse Show.

Stephens was one of only five entries from the starting field of 13 to qualify for the timed speed section of the course by riding without penalty over the 9-jump power portion at the North Elba Showgrounds. The two-time Pan American Games team Bronze Medalist was then the only one to go fault-free over the seven-jump speed section which gave her the win.

Finishing the speed section with the fastest time was Todd Minikus of Loxahatchee, FL, winner of last Sunday’s $75,000 Budweiser Grandprix of Lake Placid. Minikus, one of four riders on the U.S. team for this month’s Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, completed the jump-off with four faults and a time of 36.902 seconds on Romy. That time was good enough to earn second for Minikus who on Saturday will become just the fifth rider to sweep both the Budweiser Grandprix of Lake Placid and the Hermes I Love New York Grandprix in the same year.

In the day’s other feature class, Laura Chapot of Neshanic Station, NJ won the Lake Placid/Essex County Speed Challenge, topping a field of 13 horses with fault-free ride in 69.084 seconds on Cilthe Z. Second went to Jimmy Torano of Ft. Lauderdale, FL who finished clean in 72.305 seconds on Caldam Or.

The 2007 I Love New York Horse Show, July 3-8, is once again hosting world-class equestrian action highlighted by Saturday’s $75,000 Hermès Grandprix CSI 3*. Preceding the Grandprix is the horse show’s 15th annual Doggie Costume Contest sponsored by Lonesome Landing Garden Center of Saranac Lake, the Brown Dog Café and Wine Bar of Lake Placid and A Placid Life of Lake Placid. All people who bring a leashed dog in costume to the horse show on Saturday will be admitted free.
