Todd Minikus riding Pavarotti was at the top of his game and at the front of the competition as he won Thursday’s $6,000 1.45-meter Open Jumper Stake at the Wachovia Securities American Gold Cup.
Minikus, the first rider out of the gate, set the pace to beat and although eight other riders managed double clears, none were able to match Minikus time.
William Lowry of North Scituate, R.I. came the closest. Riding Rio Corde, he was less than .6 off of Minikus winning pace. Alison Robitaille of Upperville, Va., took 3rd aboard La Supra and Joe Fargis and Edgar were 4th.
Norman Dello Joio of Wellington, Fla., won Thursday’s $6,000 1.40 meter Speed Stake aboard Acertijo. Dello Joio was also the first rider to compete and again set the winning pace that none of his fellow competitors could match. Niall Grimes on Leonard, took second and Kate Levy was 3rd.
Tonight’s feature event, the $25,000 Wachovia Securities Welcome Stake is qualifying for Sunday’s $100,000 American Gold Cup.
