CSIO***** Barcelona (ESP) competition begins - Laura Kraut hospitalized

CSIO***** Barcelona (ESP) got underway on Thursday. The best finish by an American was Margie Engle in fourth in the opening class. She was one of 10 clears. Beezie Madden aboard Authentic also was clear but encountered three time faults in the competition.

The big story today for the American Team was that Laura Kraut entered the hospital for some tests. She complained of a severe headache. It is our understanding that Laura’s initial tests were negative, but according to the USEF Chef d’Equipe, George Morris, Kraut will remain hospitalized for more precautionary testing.

Christian Ahlmann of Germany, riding Perry Lee, was proclaimed winner of the most important class of the day, in speed and handiness. Harrie Smolders of Holland, riding Colorado, came in second , followed by Billy Twomey of Ireland, riding Whinny Jackson.

The CSIO, in it´s 95th edition, began with the “ Premio Especial Apertura Real Club de Polo”, judged by table A against the clock. The heavy rain that fell during most of the class did not stop the ten riders that cleared the course without faults. Roger Yves Bost of Belgium, riding Kire Royal Star was the fastest, followed by Cian O´Connor and Zanoubia of Ireland. Third place went to the French rider, Jean-Marc Nicolas, riding Komedia de Montsec. The best Spanish rider was Rafi Latham. With only one time fault, he came in thirteenth place, riding Jaina de Barnevil.

The second competition of the day , the “ Trofeo Diputacion de Barcelona,” was won by Irish Captain Shane Care, riding Lis Makin. Care´s flawless ride, through the eight obstacle course left second place for his fellow countryman Cameron Hanley, riding SIEC Concept. Rene Tebbel of Germany obtained third place with Team Harmony Coup de Coeur.

The final competition is on Sunday with Frank Rothenberger (GER) and Javier Trenor (ESP) teaming up to share the course designing at this event.
