(SPRUCE MEADOWS, Calgary, AB): Riders from the United States filled the top two places in the Finning International (Sec. II). This competition produced a nail-biting finish with Jeffery Welles from Pound Ridge, NY tasting the sweet smell of success on Armani.
Drawn last in a six-horse jump-off, where the rounds became faster and faster, he shaved one-tenth of a second from the time set of 40.47 by fellow team member, Beezie Madden and Judgement.
Canada’s Mario Deslauriers finished in third place, nearly two seconds in arrears while Switzerland’s Beat Mandli, who set the early pace on Principal 12, finished fourth.
Welles was named as the alternate rider for the US team at this year’s World Equestrian Games (WEG) held in Aachen, in which the team won the silver medal. He described his 11 year-old Dutch bred bay gelding as “a quick striding horse”, explaining, “I took the direct route to the fences and mostly kept galloping, although I thought the plank was quite big and had to pull up and take my time there.”
Madden, who took both team and individual silver at the WEG last week laughed that, “I knew Jeffery had a fast horse so it was the best I could do anyways!”
Finning International
Victory in Wednesday’s opening event, the Zeidler Financial International Cup (Sec. I), went to France, when Eugenie Angot headed the line-up on her first visit to Spruce Meadows.
An exciting jump-off went right to the wire with less than two seconds separating the top four places. Canada’s Eric Lamaze gave the home crowd something to cheer when he set the standard from opening draw on Narcotique de Muze II with a clean round in 41.72 seconds. This was followed by compatriot Karen Cudmore, who, together with Southern Pride also went clear but one second slower, which was to drop them to fourth place.
The winning round came next when the 35 year-old daughter of French composer Michel Legrand steered her mount Ilostra Dark round the twelve fence course in what proved to be the winning time of 40.60 seconds. Third place went to Holland’s Wout Jan van der Schans who completed the course in a time of 41.93 on Maroon.
Last to go, Britain’s Ellen Whitaker beat the winning time on AK Kanselier by nearly two seconds but just rubbed the top rail on the final fence, which rolled backwards to incur four faults, leaving them in fifth place.
