VALKENSWAARD - August 19th 2006. For the second time in succession Markus Fuchs and his grey gelding Sylver II (by Ameto Z) claimed victory in the 30.000 euros CN WorldWide Derby.
In a spectacular round as the last rider in a field of 33 competitors, the Swiss was more than three seconds faster than Ludo Philippaerts (BEL), who was the early leader and seemed to be unbeatable. “Before I entered the ring I asked the owner of my horse what he wanted me to do,” said Fuchs. “He told me: ´You have to go like hell and take all the risks!’ ” And that´s just what he did. He finished the 940 meter Derby course in amazing 102.32 seconds, leaving the position of runner-up to Philippaerts on Tauber vh Kapelhof (by Darco) in 105.51 seconds. Third went to Gregory Wathelet (UKR) with Julot Trefle (Bleu Blanc Rouge II x Foudre de Guerre) in 108.26 seconds. “I was impressed by the quality of the riders,” said Anita Ernesaks of CN WorldWide, who enjoyed her second time as a sponsor of CSI Valkenswaard. “We definitely will be back.”
The 1.50m Rabobank Prix was the second qualifier for tomorrow´s VDL Groep Grand Prix. In this Table A class against the clock Jessica Kürten (IRL) set an early pace with a clear round in a time of 61.11 seconds riding Castle Forbes Libertina (Libero H x Polydor). Eric van der Vleuten (NED) came close with Paloma (Ferro x Lucky Boy xx) in 61.77 seconds. Third went to Otto Becker (GER) with Lando 126 (Lancier x Raimondo) in 62.54 seconds. Jessica Kürten, who is currently ninth in the Global Champions Tour ranking, will need a good placement tomorrow to make it among the best eight who will receive a total of 600.000 euros in bonuses at the final in Lanaken (BEL).
In the Acorn Hill Farm Prix Ludo Philippaerts tried to earn his victory of the day, on the most successful young horse of the past three weeks, Wonderfull Miltoo (Grandeur x Darco). He scored the fastest time with 34.61 seconds, but one rail down dropped him to 10th position in this final class of the Young Horses Tour. Victory went to Gert-Jan Bruggink (NED) with Sarantos (Emilion x Larome) in 36.38 seconds, followed by Jack Ansems (NED) on VDL Groep Sapphire B (Mr. Blue x Grand Veneur) in 36.76 seconds and Jean-Claude Vangeenberghe (UKR) with Ass (Aquilino x Wendekreis) in 38.10 seconds.
The Special Invitational 1.35m was won by Emma Augier de Moussec (CZE), followed by Tonya Henning (CAN) and Bart Soetaers (BEL). Katarzyna Rdest (POL) claimed victory in the Final of the Special Invitational 1.15m – 1.25m. Danny vanden Bosch (BEL) finished runner-up. Third went to Samantha Lam (CAN). The final of the Special Invitational 1.35m will take place tomorrow.
