Ottawa, Ontario — At the half-way mark in the 2006 Jump Canada Series, Tamie Phillips of Strathmore, AB, has taken a healthy lead in the standings.
Phillips has earned a total of 212.30 series points aboard Lucas, the 10-year-old homebred Canadian Warmblood gelding owned by her mother, Merle Gardner. The short listed rider, and alternate to Canada’s 2006 World Equestrian Games Team, began the 2006 Jump Canada Series in March by finishing fourth in the $25,000 Telus Grand Prix at the Spruce Meadows ‘Winter Farewell’. More recently, Phillips and Lucas contested the $35,000 Kubota Cup Grand Prix on June 3 at the Edmonton Northlands competition, where they claimed second place after being just 1/100th of a second off the lead.
The athlete currently sitting second in the standings, Jonathan Asselin of Calgary, AB, claimed the Edmonton victory. Riding Lolita, an eight-year-old Oldenburg mare owned by Attache Stables, Asselin also gained points early in the season by finishing second in the $25,000 TD Canada Trust Grand Prix held March 19 at the Spruce Meadows ‘Spring Welcome’. Their current points total is 141.30.
In third position overall with 137.60 points is Campbellville, ON, native, Mike Grinyer, and his 15-year-old Holsteiner gelding, Alcatraz 34. The pair has been placing consistently throughout the Jump Canada Series, including a fourth place finish in the $25,000 TD Canada Trust Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows, and a sixth place finish in the $50,000 Grand Prix at the Caledon National in Palgrave, ON.
Other top pairs within striking distance in the Jump Canada Series standings include WEG Team alternate Margie Gayford of Sharon, ON, and Stuntman who are in fourth position with 134.10.
